Barbershopper Of The Year

Charles (Rip) Wilson

The honor of being BOTY is certainly one that Rip richly deserves. Since joining our Chapter, Rip has been involved in numerous projects, which include the development of the Gospel Chorus, our Singing Valentines program and, most recently, spearheading the production of our 2012 Annual Show. He has always been eager to provide labor, expertise or, on many occcasions, his home to aid in the operation and growth of our Chapter. Congratulations Rip!

December 10th-A Fun, But Busy Day

On Saturday, December 10th at 8:00am, about 30 Chapter members met at The Salvation Army headquarters on Maple St. in Akron. We were divided into two groups and bused to Acme stores all around the greater Akron area. Once at the stores, we met with the bell ringers and did a short performance to help make shoppers aware of the fund raising efforts of The Salvation Army.

Coffee, Donuts, bottled water and our own supply of Christmas spirit were more than enough to keep us singing carols until after the noon hour. This was a departure from our usual Salvation Army gigs of recent years, but it certainly allowed us to cover a wide area and get up close and personal with our audience.

Later that evening, we gathered at The Spaghetti Warehouse for the December business meeting/Christmas party. After dinner, we were treated to songs by Chapter quartets and the chorus. As mentioned in the opening article of this Bulletin issue, it was announced at the meeting that the 2011 Barbershopper Of The Year award went to Charles (Rip) Wilson.

Thank you to Dennis Conrad, who did his usual masterful job in coordinating the whole day's events.

Fox 8 In The Morning

On Monday, Dec. 12th, we made our holiday appearance on the Fox 8 Morning Show. We were ready to give it our all because we really hadn't sung much since Saturday. This is always a great gig and, through the Fox 8 webpage, we can promote our Chapter and the Annual Show. A round of cyber-applause to all who participated in our Christmas TV appearance.

Editors Note: Since Sue and I will soon be traveling south to Florida, by way of Cincinnati (for Christmas) and Hendersonville, TN (for another Christmas), this will be the last full edition of The Bulletin until May, 2012. By the way, we already had Christmas in Kent with Mike and Kim. I will post shortened issues each month to recognize birthdays and mention some brief news or entertainment items. Until then, have a Merry Christmas and I'll see you in the new year. Maybe, if I keep up with the show songs online and we do a repeat show in Medina in May, I can actually be in it.

A Golden Evening

At our rehearsal on October 11, we honored two Chapter members who recently reached the 50-year plateau of Society membership. Jim Bouterse and Bill Trumpold were both able to be present along with 53-year member, Oscar "Buzz" Fraley. Congratulations to Jim and Bill on having such an long and distinguished tenure in the barbershop harmony. Many Chapter members shared memories with our two honorees, especially related to the time when both were members of the outstanding Chapter quartet, The Interludes. Bill, Jim, Buzz and John Rohal( 60-year member), give us four men in our Chapter who have 50 or more years in BHS.

The three "golden" members joined with Chapter President, Jim Bishop, to sing a familiar barbershop song. Give a listen.

Shine On Harvest Moon

This song is wonderful to sing and listen to at anytime, but certainly it is even more enjoyable at this time of year.

Jack Norworth wrote the words, and Nora Bayes wrote the music. They were a vaudeville couple who introduced the song in “The Follies of 1908.”

Here’s an excerpt from album notes from an early 1950’s recording by the Cities Service Green and White Quartet, thanks to Joseph Schlesinger, Houston, who seems to have a recording of every barbershop quartet ever recorded.

“Barbershop quartet singing brings back memories of an unashamedly sentimental era. It calls to mind qualities that have, regrettably, fallen by the wayside in the slashing swirl of modern living. The composers of one song in this RCA Victor collection serve to illustrate the point. The song, SHINE ON, HARVEST MOON, was written and made famous by Jack Norworth and Nora Bayes, singing sweethearts of many years ago. And when the loving pair played any theater, the lights out front blazed with a chivalrous message: ‘Nora Bayes, assisted and admired by Jack Norworth.’”

Another Successful Corn Roast

On Tuesday, September 6, barbershoppers from the far reaches of NE Ohio gathered at the Tadmore Shrine shelter for the annual Akron Chapter Corn Roast. As always, a myriad of volunteers, under the capable direction of Dan Nichols, provided all those in attendance with great food, refreshing beverages and a wonderful evening of chorus and quartet singing. MC Rip Wilson kept the evening's program moving and the slightly cool, but dry weather made for a very enjoyable event. Thanks again to all those who helped to make the corn roast happen.

Harmony In Derby

Our President, Jim Bishop, has been communicating with members of the Derby A Cappella Chorus located in the English town of Derby. (Note: Robin Reid assures me that the pronunciation is "Darby". It's good to have at least one of our chorus members that speaks English.) Jim felt that the Derby Chorus and the Derbytown Chorus had a natural bond and that it would be good for us to get better acquainted.

The Tradition Continues

On Saturday, August 27, The Derbytown Chorus made its second appearance of the summer at an Akron Aeros baseball game. As usual, we sang The National Anthem before the start of the game and led the crowd in singing Take Me Out To The Ball Game during the seventh inning stretch. Jack Kunklier continued another tradition by ably tossing the ceremonial first pitch. I suspect that Jack and Stan Martin have been practicing together because Jack's form was very similar to that of Stan when he did the honors at the July game.

Chapter Quartet News

Lock 4 (formerly known as Research)

On August 15, Lock 4 helped FirstEnergy kick off their 2011-2012 United Way campaign. The quartet provided musical entertainment for the company's Ice Cream Social and United Way Agency Fair. From left to right are:

On Saturday, September 10, Eu4ria helped the family of Helen Johnson celebrate her 95th birthday. Dan Nichols, tenor, Jim Heaton, lead, Jim Elliott, bass and Jim Bishop, baritone donned their red vests and straw hats and serenaded Helen at the Everett Road covered bridge in Bath Township. And The Rains Came

This spot was to contain a story and some pictures of our performance yesterday at The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park. We had 36 singers warmed up and ready to go and a song list packed with patriotic music. But, as sometimes happens with outdoor venues, a brief, yet strong downpour washed out the event. Still, a big thanks goes out to Dennis Conrad for securing and planning the event and to all who helped with the risers and other logistics. Maybe we can try this one again.

School Days

We have once again come to the month of August and that means the start of another school year. Here is some history and a recording of a song that speaks of adults looking back on their school years with nostalgia. I think most of us know the lyrics to the chorus of this song. Maybe it would be a good choice if we are looking for a woodshed song at rehearsal tomorrow night.

School Days, also known as School Days (When We Were A Couple Of Kids), is an American popular song, written in 1907 by Will Cobb and Gus Edwards.

The song speaks of a mature couple remembering their lifelong friendship and their days in primary school.

Bill Trumpold Reaches Golden Milestone

If you have been reading the Harmonizer magazine carefully, you already know that, in the list of the latest 50 year Society members, was the name of Chapter tenor, Bill Trumpold. Congratulations to Bill for this outstanding achievement. Just think how many songs that Bill and others in this select group have sung. Bill is not alone in this honor within our Chapter. One Of Akron's "Forgotten" Sons

On May 15, The Akron Beacon Journal published an article about the life and achievements of Akron-born lyricist, Grant Clarke (1891-1931). If you missed the article, you can see it by clicking on the "Grant Clarke Article" link in the Quick Connections list at the top left of the Bulletin page. It was written by Beacon Journal staff writer, Mark J. Price.

Perhaps due to his short time here on earth, Clarke's accomplishments are not widely known today. Along with writing lyrics for more than 100 songs, such as Second Hand Rose, Ragtime Cowboy Joe and Am I Blue?, he also collaborated with many famous composers, including Irving Berlin. In 1914, he became a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

So, here is a performance of one of Grant Clarke's often-recorded songs.

Recently , you may have noticed two young gentlemen accompanying Chapter member Charlie Horning at rehearsals. These two singers are Charlie's grandsons, Matt and Tom McIntyre, who are visiting from Nashville, TN. Welcome Matt and Tom. It's great to have you sing with the chorus. Singing Mice?

While waiting in a doctor's office earlier this year, I read an article in the Smithsonian magazine that chronicled scientific investigation of sounds made by mice. Many of these sounds were above the range of human hearing, but there were instances where mice made audible sounds. Some scientists believe that the mice use these sounds to communicate much like the "songs" used by whales.

I have placed a "singing mouse" link in the Quick Connections list. This video shows a mouse that was genetically engineered to sing. I couldn't embed this video in the Bulletin like I usually do because the embed feature had been disabled for this clip.

I can't help but wonder how long it will be before we see the first all-rodent barbershop quartet.

It's Back!

Welcome to the first Bulletin issue of 2011. You may notice a difference in the appearance of this and future issues. These changes were done to better showcase the Chapter and also to make The Bulletin easier to read.

Another change is that there will be only one Bulletin issue per month, on the third Monday.

Something that hasn't changed is that the Bulletin will still emphasize sight and sound presentations related to barbershop singing in general and our Chapter in particular.

If it seems that The Bulletin doesn't always show the schedule of upcoming chorus events, remember that we have other Chapter publications that focus on that topic. On a weekly basis, we have "High Notes" by Robin Reid. In addition to being available at each rehearsal, "High Notes" is archived on the Chapter website. There is also the email newsletter by Jim Bishop.

The "Quick Connections" links that are shown on the left of the Bulletin page will provide an easy way to connect to online sites that allow you to keep up with what is happening in the barbershop community.

Also, keep in mind that you don't have to cover the whole issue at one time. This one actually turned out to be quite a bit longer than I thought it would. The Bulletin is always there, on your computer, whenever you have time to look at it. For the newer Chapter members, the archived issues are listed in the left column of the Bulletin. You can go all the way back to 2008 if you want.

So, that should be enough introduction. Enjoy this issue.

Multi-tasking Chapter Member

Over the years, Chapter member Mike Sitter has been someone who is always willing to pitch in and work. That was never more evident than recently, when Mike, as part of his duties as Archbishop of Canterbury, officiated at the royal wedding in London. All that and he still finds time to sing in a quartet. Hats off to you, Mike!

Some Songs Stand The Test Of Time

In the time period following The Civil War in America, the songs that were being written did not lend themselves to barbershop harmony. They simply didn't contain the type and variety of chords that barbershop required. One notable exception is "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen", written in 1876.

Here is a video of Ken Curtis, along with The Sons Of The Pioneers, singing this ballad in the 1950 movie "Rio Grande". You may remember Ken from his role as Festus on the "Gunsmoke" TV show. He didn't get to use his great singing voice much on that program.

Harry Von Tilzer wrote barbershop favorites like "Wait 'Till The Sun Shines, Nellie" and "I Want A Girl, Just Like The Girl Who Married Dear Old Dad". Here is "Old School" singing another of Harry's compositions.

Barbershop Humor

An Irishman named O’Leary, who loved to sing as he worked, bought a mule to farm his garden. The mule worked well, but was almost totally deaf. So, when his owner yelled "Whoa!" the animal often continued plowing.

Asked how the mule was working out, O’Leary shook his head. "There was a time," he said, "when all my neighbors could hear was me singing my lilting melodies. Lately, I’m afraid, all they’ve heard are my riled Irish whoas."

The Floradora Girls were the first quartet to perform in public using the name "Sweet Adelines". The date of that first performance was September 18, 1945. The Floradora Girls were featured in SAI's first official logo and are still featured in the medals worn by SAI's international quartet champions

The concept traces back to an Edwardian musical, "Floradora", that featured a double sextet (above) and attractive young ladies that became known as "Floradora Girls" . The show opened in London in 1899 and then came to Broadway, where it became the first big hit of the 20th century.

Here is an adaptation of this performance in the 1930 movie "Floradora Girl" starring Marion Davies.

35mm Memories

Since returning from Florida, I have taken on the task of converting some Chapter show slides into digital form. The time period for these slides is from the late 60's to 1980. Here are a few memories from the 1968 show. I would like to hear from anyone who might have recollections to share about this show.

Note: The bright onstage lighting and the distance from which these pictures were taken make it difficult to get high quality scans from the slides. I will work at trying to improve this process.

Middle Bass Barbershop Weekend

The 63rd annual Barbershop Weekend was held this year on August 13-15. More than a dozen quartets entertained crowds near the Perry Monument on Friday night and again at the Middle Bass Town Hall on Saturday night. As always, there were many opportunities to sing, greet old friends and meet new ones. The cook shack was a busy place. The grill was always ready if you wanted to fry up a tasting meal and there was a great pancake and sausage breakfast there on Saturday morning.

After the quartet entertainment on Saturday night, all barbershoppers (I estimate around 100) took the stage for the mass sing. Just being up there with that group, being directed by barbershop legends like Burt Szabo, is enough reason to make the trip each August. If you have not attended Middle Bass recently (or ever) make a note on your calendar for next year. Many of the men who have kept this tradition going have passed on or are unable to make the trip due to health issues. There was a noticeable infusion of younger singers this year and we need to continue and build on that trend. As many of us shouted after we closed Saturday's program with KTWWS, "It's Great To Be A Barbershopper".

Editor's Note: Do you think that the "Fresh Corn" on the grocery store welcome sign might have a double meaning? After hearing some of the jokes during quartet performances, I think that they have a valid point.

August 17-Open House And Visitation

We know that every Tuesday rehearsal is an open house, but last Tuesday was a special night indeed. The Akron Derbytown Chorus hosted members from The Hall Of Fame Chorus from Canton and The Salem Jubilee Chorus. Each chorus as well as chapter quartets entertained throughout the evening. Then it was time for socializing. Once again, Cliff Crocker provided his now famous chili in addition to hot dogs. A big thanks to Cliff and also to other Akron Chapter members who supplied food items.

What O.C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

Refuse to go on stage when the audience consists of a group of villagers holding torches and pitchforks.
At the last COTS school for lyricists I submitted a portfolio of limericks from my Nantucket series. They were rejected, but never returned.
Have you ever tried to teach a lead three measures of music in which he is asked to give up the melody line.
I sang lead in a high school quartet. After our first public performance my mother suggested that I find three other kids who didn't sharp so often. Mothers are wonderful.
I make a point of taking a tape recorder to every chorus rehearsal. My section leader thumps my back and the chorus director beams his approval.. The batteries died three months ago.
Accept that every lead has his own "comfort zone." You've got two choices: (a) pitch the song within his zone or (b) be prepared for a downhill sleigh ride while he steers you home.
A judge who sings bass is like an auto mechanic who never owned a car.
Bring me a guy with absolute pitch and I'll cure him for you.
COTS schools make quiet simple people feel they're complex.

Performance In Green (but wearing red)

At 4:00 on the afternoon of August 22, about 30 Akron Chapter members entertained the crowd at the annual Queen of Heaven Family Funfest. The chorus plus quartets, Gear Shiftin', Clear Choice, and Keyed Up provided barbershop music for approximately 45 minutes as part of the festival's entertainment program. Director, Scott Giles, and assistant directors Dan Nichols and Terry Arman ably guided us through a variety of songs from our show and performance repertoire.

Bulletin Hiatus

This will be the last Bulletin issue for the near future. I have been producing The Bulletin for two years (60 issues) and feel that I need a break. Also, I want to take some time to look over the many other publications that I receive online from other Bulletin and Newsletter editors to look for ways to make our publication better serve our readers.

When I started the Bulletin, one of my goals was to introduce audio and video capabilities to Chapter communications. I hope that I have succeeded in that. Keep in mind that, during The Bulletin's absence, you still have the High Notes, so well done by Robin Reid, and the email Newsletter capably authored by Jim Bishop. Remember to read these publications so that you stay up-to-date on Chapter activities.

All of the archived editions of The Bulletin will remain online, so feel free to browse through them whenever you choose. Also the links to our Chapter webpage, JAD, BHS etc. will still be active.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who provided encouragement and support during these past 24 months. It has been fun for me and hopefully The Bulletin will be back in the future.

Clear Choice Sings For Browns Fans

Last Saturday, August 7, the Cleveland Browns held their annual Family Day at Cleveland Brown's Stadium. It's an opportunity for families to enjoy food, games and entertainment around the outside of the stadium and later watch a team scrimmage followed by a team autograph session.
This year, Clear Choice was asked to sing The National Anthem before the start of the scrimmage. After meeting for breakfast, we traveled to the stadium for a rehearsal before the gates opened to the public at 11:00. Since our tenor, Dan Nichols, was in Kansas City at Directors Camp, Mike Halter ably provided the high notes.. Like I always say, "If you want a good tenor, available on short notice, grow your own."

It was a great experience and definitely the largest audience ever for us. We stayed for the first half of the scrimmage and then traveled to The Solon Recreation Center to do a 45 minute show as part of a 90th birthday celebration. It was a long, but enjoyable day.

Things That O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

The problem for people who don't understand barbershopping is that after they've heard the show's opening quartet, that's as good as they're gonna feel all night.
I sang lead in my last quartet. The tenor was a squeaker and the bari always sang the octave to the tenor. The bass, a boomer, was an ex-military sergeant who reveled in bellowing "incoming artillery." We never entered any contests because we believed that it would be a sell-out to the structured-singing crowd.
The many hours of televised criminal trials has even invaded our hobby. The Music VP issued a gag order on our quartet.
If there is a nit to be picked, bet on the baritone to do it.
Why is it that too many quartets, having earned their medals, stop singing the songs and arrangements that got them there?
Want Ad: Baritone for a top-20 quartet. Must have International experience and a relatively new large van. Send photo of van.
I've read that 'the fewer the number of intellectuals, the more popular is the hobby.' If true, I've sung with a few of the most popular quartets our Society has ever had.
You all sing with deep emotion about Mandy Lee, Evaline, aura Lee, Daisy, Yona and Lulu. Plus, the queen of them all, Adeline. Get real. In your entire life you've never known any woman with any of these names.
Refuse to sing anywhere that has hot air hand-dryers in the men's room.
I always believed that if I could find three similarly talented guys we would be a shoo-in at International-until I noticed an eighteen inch hair growing out of my left ear. Check your shaving mirror.

Mitch Miller

July 4, 1911-July 31, 2010

I'm sure that most of you are aware of the passing of Mitch Miller from either a TV or
newspaper report. The older members of the Chapter are more likely to recall the "Sing Along With Mitch" albums and his TV show. Since we promote a spirit of singing for fun, I can't think of a person that did more to encourage people in that respect than Mitch Miller. Although he had a long and successful music career as an instrumentalist, arranger and director, his sing along concept made him famous in this country and abroad.

On a personal level, when my brother and I would take too long to get out of bed and get ready for church on Sunday mornings, we could expect to hear Mitch Miller and the gang coming from our "hi-fi" at maximum volume. I'm sure that many of those vibrations are etched permanently in my brain and may have been partly responsible for my love of singing. I still have all the 33 1/3 records of Mitch Miller that my Dad played on those Sunday mornings long ago. I think I may crank them up sometime soon as a tribute my Dad and Mitch Miller.

Visitation

On Tuesday, August 17, in additional to our normal open house for men who like to sing, we are going to be visited by barbershoppers from the Canton and Salem chapters. Cliff Crocker has offered to provide his world famous chili and hot dogs. Other Derbytowners are asked to bring a food item to compliment Cliff's masterpiece.

This would also be a great time to invite a guest (or 10) of your own. See you there.

In Memory Of Hal Moses

Last Tuesday, July 20, Harold "Hal" Moses passed away. Hal was a valued member of the baritone section, The Matinee Singers and the chorus. Most recently he sang with The Sounds Of Distinction quartet and over the years has contributed as an arranger and director. Even in recent times, when his health declined, Hal made the effort to attend and participate in rehearsals and performances. His ever-present smile will be greatly missed.

In addition to his barbershop activities, Hal had served as choir director for several area churches over a period of more than fifty years.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Hal's wife, Janet and his family in this difficult time.

Singing For The Salvation Army In Wadsworth

We have become accustomed to lending our voices around the Red Kettle to raise money in December. On Saturday, July 17, we traveled to Wadsworth at the request of The Salvation Army as part of the 3 on 3 BBQ fund raiser. The crowd was very receptive as the chorus and Chapter quartets, Clear Choice and Gear Shiftin' provided an hour of barbershop songs. Some area restaurants were on hand for a contest to decide who had the best BBQ. Some of our members remained and sampled the offerings. From personal experience, I can say that they were all delicious. I'm just glad that they had "sample" servings available so that I could try each one and not overdo it.

Chorus Provides Spark For Aeros

Over 40 members of The Derbytown Chorus gathered at Canal Park on Tuesday, July 20 to sing The National Anthem prior to the game between the Aeros and The Altoona Curve. It was great to have such a large turn-out this year. If you couldn't be there, make a note to watch the schedule and join us next time.

During the ceremonial first pitch, , Tom Macko, represented our Chapter very well with a mighty throw. We continued another tradition by leading the crowd in singing, Take Me Out To The Ballgame, during the seventh inning stretch.

As for the spark provided by our singing, the Aeros hit five home runs during the game and won by a final score of 10-3.

33rd Performance At Copley Circle

Yesterday, July 25, was the 33rd consecutive appearance of The Akron Derbytown Chorus as a part of the Copley Summer Concert Series. After some of the stormy weather that we had experienced lately, the evening turned out to be beautiful. Thanks go out to Charlie Horning, who among other things, is in charge of the weather for this event.

In addition to the chorus, Chapter quartets Clear Choice, The Summit Chordsmen, and Keyed Up entertained the very appreciative crowd. We always recognize many familiar faces in the audience (in addition to those to whom we are related) but there are also some new attendees every year that come out to hear some good old barbershop music.

Our featured guest quartets this year were 4-Way Stop and Prestige. Both quartets are from our own Johnny Appleseed District. 4-Way Stop was the 2009 District quartet champion and 2009 District collegiate quartet champion and Prestige captured the silver medal at the 2010 International Convention and Contest in Philadelphia earlier this month, just missing the Gold by the smallest of margins.

Both quartets wowed the audience with a variety of songs, proving beyond a doubt that you can be born after 1980 and sing exceptional four part close harmony.

2010 Convention Finale

I hope that the four special Convention issues of the Bulletin were informative. There were three items that were not included in those issues. Two because they occurred very late in our stay in Philadelphia and the other because I thought that it was important enough to be held back for a regular edition. So here is the Convention "wrap-up".

Darryl Flinn Inducted Into Barbershop HOF

On Saturday evening at the Convention, the Barbershop Hall of Fame inducted the 2010 class. Among those inducted was Darryl Flinn. Darryl has served both the Society and our District as an officer, judge, director and quartet singer. This contest also marked Darryl's retirement as a judge.

Currently Darryl is singing bass with the 2010 Bronze medalist quartet, Lightly Seasoned and is the director of The City of Flags Chorus in Canton.
Thank you to Darryl for his leadership and contributions to barbershopping on both the international and local levels, and congratulations on this well-deserved honor.

Great "Swan Song" for Crossroads

As many of you may know, at the conclusion of the quartet finals, it is traditional to have the past Gold Medal quartet sing for the audience. This year, after doing their first two numbers, Crossroads brought out their wives, children and grandchildren and all participated vocally in the final number. It was a special moment for all those in attendance and a reminder how important all of our families are and how much we owe them for allowing us to participate in this wonderful hobby of ours.

July 4th in Philadelphia

Sue and I decided early on that we would stay one day longer so that we could experience the holiday in the historic setting of Philadelphia. It involved a change in hotels to get a reasonable rate and a bit of walking to get down to the Art Museum area, but it was worth it. The length of Benjamin Franklin Blvd. from 20th street to the Art museum was lined with concessions and booths of all kinds and by 8:00 in the evening there were hundreds of thousands of people. We listened to a free concert by The Roots and Goo Goo Dolls. No, they did not do a salute to barbershop. But it was good music and we enjoyed it along with the rest of the crowd. At 11:00 the spectacular fireworks display began from behind the Art Museum. Then it was a liesurely walk back to the hotel. We settled in for a good night's sleep so that we were ready to catch the train on Monday for our return to Ohio.

Things O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

The only reason our pitchpipes have 13 notes is some wiseguy (usually a bari) can "prove" that we dropped a half note.
Contests: You gotta believe in luck. How else can we explain the success of those we don't like?
I prefer poor voices to poor ears because sometimes they take a rest.
Judges who think they know everything about barbershopping are very irritating to those of us who do.
Stage Presence: If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done.
Our chapter named my last quartet "Sans Talent." We liked the name: it had a certain continental flavor to it.
My friends suggested I find four other guys and form a quartet.
The Devil: "Here's the deal. In exchange for the souls of all your children, and your children's children for the next five generations, I'll put you into an International Champion Quartet." Joe Barbershopper: "So what's the catch."
At our last (not Previous) shot at quartet competition, one of the judges came up on stage and drew a white chalk outline around where we had stood.
Hell is a half-filled auditorium.

Mega Sing

About 1,000 barbershoppers gathered on The Independence Mall, in the shadow of The Liberty Bell on Saturday, 7/3. We sang many songs, but here is a video of the singing of The National Anthem.

Sue and I must leave soon for the 30th Street Station to catch the train home. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday night.

Twenty-seven Choruses, One Is Golden

The chorus competition wrapped up at about 10:00 on Friday night. The variety of costumes, themes and the wonderful singing made for a great, but lengthy day of barbershop entertainment. The top five finishers are listed below with their total scores (out of a possible 3,000).

Mega Sing

At 12:30 on Saturday afternoon, over 1,000 barbershoppers (by my unofficial estimate) gathered near Independence Hall to sing. We did several PoleCats plus "Hello Mary Lou"and "God Bless America". The mass chorus was ably directed by Rick Spencer from his perch in the "bucket" of one of Philadelphia's fire trucks. The truck was provided at no charge by the city fire department. The Fire Chief even joined Rick and directed us in The Star Spangled Banner. As often happens, we concluded our singing with "Keep The Whole World Singing".

And Then There Were Ten

The judges have now selected the top 10 quartets from the 20 groups that were competing in the semifinals. Congratulations to The Allies (JAD) (shown competing on the right) for making it to that lofty level. They will be vying with the other nine quartets in the finals on Saturday night.

It's Not All About Singing (but mostly)

We have taken some time away from the Convention Center to explore the wonderful city of Philadelphia. Here are a few pictures of what we have seen.

Friday morning at 10:00, the chorus competition will begin. There will be 27 of the Society's top groups going for the gold. Among them will be our own JAD choruses, The Alliance and The Southern Gateway Chorus. By the end of the day, we will know which groups came out on top.

The Competition Has Begun

Sue and I successfully negotiated our train trip and arrived here in Philadelphia about 3:00 pm on Tuesday. We took a taxi from the station to our hotel and got checked in. We joined the Stone family, Ray, Mary and Melanie and the five of us had dinner together at a nearby restaurant.

There is a whole lot of great barbershop singing going on here in Philadelphia. And I'm not talking about just the hotel lobbies, restaurants and street corners. The Collegiate competition concluded last night. Swedish Match (SNOBS) edged JAD Champs Prestige to win the gold. The scores for these two quartets were 998 and 996, respectively. That means averages of 82.3 and 82.2. Talk about close competitions. For all scores, see the BHS Home site.

Today, we watched the first part of the quartet quarterfinals. That included both The Allies and Hot Air Buffoons from our District. Tonight is part two. By that time, the field will be narrowed from 51 to 20 for the semis tomorrow. As always, there will be some excellent quartets that will not advance.

Philadelphia, Here We Come!

Lovers of barbershop singing, from both within and outside of the Society are converging on Philadelphia this week for the 2010 International Convention. What a great place to be on the upcoming July 4th weekend. Sue and I, along with several other Akron Chapter members, family and friends will be there.

If today's Bulletin issue seems a little shorter than usual, there is a reason. I plan to have some special International Report issues that will come directly from the Convention. A notification will be sent to let you know that these "Philadelphia Stories" are online. If any of those Chapter members that are at International have a short (100 words or less) article about their convention activities, please send them to the Bulletin email address, derbytown08@gmail.com., or give them to me directly in writing.

In the 2010 Show, the chorus sang the song "Radio" and the lyrics mentioned a list of classic radio programs. What O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

Go figure: If the quartet is stubborn and wins, it has guts. If it is stubborn and loses, it's dumb.
The three other parts can reform, but a bass is forever.
There is a pessimist in your chapter who thinks the old days were better. You know who I mean. You also know the optimist who believes that things are getting better. Trust me on this one, they're both wrong.
No member of the chorus is completely useless - he can always be used as a horrible example.
The amount of food prepared for an Afterglow, as a percentage of the guest's requirements, is either 84 percent or 192 percent.
When a barbershopper tells you, "I'm as good a singer as you are", it means that he thinks he is better.
We spend our lives buying new-stuff and throwing away old-stuff. Exception: we never throw away an old pitchpipe. Interesting.
The talent of a tenor is inversely proportionate to the weight of his music bag.
No quartet or chorus will ever do "Down Our Way" well. A classic case of "no respect for the too familiar."
Give pause to joining a chapter that has the local nursing homes singing for them.

Quartet Activity

Clear Choice

June 14-sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a vocal arrangement of "Taps" at the dedication of a new flagpole at the Our Lady of the Elms Athletic Complex in Bath. It was a very fitting Flag Day activity.

June 17-did a 30 minute show from the gazebo on the Medina Square and entertained the crowd of about 2000 with strolling and singing from 6-8. The occasion was the annual ice cream festival of the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

June 24-provided the musical entertainment at the Berea Masonic Temple for a meeting of The Order of The Eastern Star. Worthy Grand Warder, Vivian Chrisopulos was the guest of honor. We sang "Sweet (Vivian) Adeline" to her and since she was of Irish descent, we added "My Wild Irish Rose". Our "organ recital" was included in this performance. We hadn't used it for some time, but it turned out that corn still sells well in most parts of Ohio.

July 11-Dan, Ray, Jim and Bill will be singing at the amphitheater of Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia at 7:00 pm. The evening is billed as "Barbershop in the Park" and will include both The Schoenbrunn Valley Chorus and a Chapter quartet, a group from Sweet Adelines, and the 2010 International Seniors Bronze Medal quartet, Lightly Seasoned.

All Chapter quartets are encouraged to submit information about past and/or future performances for inclusion in The Bulletin.

Flag Day

Each year, on June 14, millions of Americans take time to display or otherwise honor our country's flag. According to legend, George Washington and two other members of the Continental Congress asked Betsy Ross, a young widow in her early 20's to sew the first American flag. This happened sometime in the late spring of 1776. The flag was officially adopted by the Continental Congress a year later . The first "official" Flag Day was celebrated during the flag's centennial in 1877.
In 1916, a grass roots movement caused President Woodrow Wilson to issue a proclamation setting June 14 as the date for a nationwide observance of Flag Day. Congress made the holiday official in 1949 by resolving "That the 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as Flag Day"

Quartet News

The Summit Chordsmen

On Sunday, June 13, The Summit Chordsmen performed outdoors from 2-4 at The Liberty Residence in Wadsworth. Fresh from a day of coaching at Apple Corps on Saturday, the quartet got a chance to put to use what they had learned. As often happens, the crowd continued to grow in size as the performance progressed. We all know that, if you want a crowd, bring in a good barbershop quartet.

Clear Choice

Clear Choice will be singing The National Anthem tonight (6/14) at the Our Lady of the Elms Athletic Complex in Bath. The occasion is the dedication of a new flag pole at that location. What a good Flag Day observance. The quartet will also be providing a vocal arrangement of Taps.

What O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

Singing barbershop is the illusion of perfection. I delude myself regularly.
Ninety-five percent of all leads are singing out of their range.
In defense of his suggestion for new chorus uniforms, my friend claimed the "the better you're dressed, the better you sing." I gave it a try. I wore a brand new, top of the line, 3-piece suit to the next chorus rehearsal. I still flatted.
If you're having trouble finding the fourth guy for your quartet, consider this: stop looking. Instead, call your three-man group a "mini chorus." It's all a matter of semantics. A mini chorus will fly. A three-man quartet is a dumb idea.
Show Chairman: No one ever left the theater of an Annual Show saying, "it was a lousy show, but it did come in under budget."
Every chorus requires a contest to sustain it's own sense of worth.
The less you know about singing lead, the more attractive it is.
Contests: The judge's jokes are always funny.
Chorus Directors: If you let the chorus discover your standards, they'll use them against you.
Headquarters Hotel: Never try to adjust your clothing in a crowded elevator.

Security Notice

At last Tuesday's rehearsal, an alert chorus member observed a man acting suspiciously in the parking lot across the street from Holy Trinity. (No, it was not one of us this time.) This man was going from car to car and appeared to be checking to see if any doors or trunks were unlocked. The police were called and they questioned this individual. There was some indication that he had been doing the same thing during the previous rehearsal. We should be sure that our vehicles are locked, just in case.

Since the last Bulletin was published on May 10th, I received this note from Jean Turley, Ed Crosley's daughter. She asked that I share it with the Chapter.

Singing At Copley Place

On Saturday, May 22, we once again were welcomed to Copley Place in Fairlawn. Our directors, Dan Nichols, Terry Arman and Bud Couts ably led us through a forty-five minute performance that included songs from the 2010 show, some old favorites and songs from Chapter quartets. The audience was very enthusiastic and many sang along with the chorus.

As those of you who have joined in our Copley Place singing over the past few years know, the venue is a beautiful place in which to perform. The administration and staff have been very helpful to the chorus by, among other things, providing transportation to some of our Cleveland TV appearances.And at the end of our singing, we were invited to join with others in attendance and enjoy dessert and coffee. What a nice way to brighten up a somewhat rainy day.

Beware the 'gambler' barbershopper who believes he'll get even on the next song, two at the most.

A good tag will never beat a good song.

A guaranteed way to increased chorus membership, go out and buy new risers that meet your current needs.

Want more money for your chapter treasury? Maybe this idea will start your brain juices flowing. Do a double printing of all tickets to your annual show. True, at curtain time you may have a little chaos in the aisles. So what. You tell them it was the printer's fault, followed by your loudest song. And, besides, it's only a rented hall.

Fifty percent of all chapter presidents believe that, when the nominating committee was asking for volunteers for that job, the rest of the chapter collectively, took one step backward. As relates to any other elected job, this figure raises to 90%.

The statistical probability of your chorus/quartet winning at the international level is about equal to any two guys in your chapter mounting a heated campaign to obtain your vote in the joint pursuit for the job of treasurer.

Annual chapter elections are about as exciting as vocal warm up exercises. Here's a way to really spice them up. Make the post of past president an elected office. You'll be swamped by contenders. Why not? All you gotta learn is how to say "we never did it that way."

Tired of giving your annual show audience the same old uniform look? Consider this. Get your local church choir to trade their robes for your uniforms for one weekend. It will give you a brand new look for your Saturday night show and increase the attendance at the following morning's services.

Without fail I attend every chorus rehearsal. No misses. No exceptions. No excuses. I feel that it's the least I can do for my chapter because, come contest time, I prefer sitting up in the balcony keeping score on the back of my program. (an aside. I polled my chorus on this. They didn't seem to mind. A really nice bunch of guys.)

When you can no longer duck from taking a job in your chapter, become the chapter's bulletin editor. To begin with, it doesn't take much talent and you can do the job entirely in the comfort of your own home. In many ways it's much like singing lead; it requires a heavy dose of attitude adjustment. If you can restructure your thinking to truly believe that you are only responsible to some level of barbershopping higher than your chapter, your district, or Nashville, you'll have a lock on it.

Recruiting Signs: The Next Generation

Our campaigns with the "Wanted: Men Who Like To Sing" yard signs have been instrumental in the increase in chorus membership that we have enjoyed recently. All those who participated in that program deserve much thanks. However, as with all successful endeavors, we should not rest on our laurels. The time has come to "ramp" (pun definitely intended) up our efforts and make it easier for prospective members to find us. So, the Bulletin is proud to unveil the 2010 recruiting sign.

An Afternoon At The Ballpark

This past Saturday, May 8, thirty-three (by unofficial count) members of the Akron Derbytown Chorus made what has become an annual visit to Progressive Field in Cleveland. We were once again invited to sing the National Anthem before the game.

As often happens with barbershoppers, we found many opportunities to sing before our main duties were scheduled. As men, along with family and friends arrived, pitches were blown and songs rang forth. The joy was there from the start and the volume increased as more singers arrived.
We began our pregame concert outside of Gate C, near the Bob Feller statue and received hearty applause from those standing in line waiting for the gates to open. The set even included a tongue-in-cheek rendition of "Jingle Bells" in honor of the chilly temperature. When those gates did open, we moved our performance inside to the concourse, mostly to escape the substantial wind and occasional rain. Ah, May in Ohio!

The group gradually made its way around the concourse toward Gate A where we were to meet our guide for the trip to the field level. Naturally, there were pauses for singing along the way.
Once at the location where we were to enter the playing field, we continued our singing, to warm up our bodies as well as our voices. Then it was time to perform for the crowd.

The sky brightened a bit, the wind subsided a little and we proudly sang The Star Spangled Banner. For those of you who have not joined us for this and past performances at Progressive Field, it's difficult to describe the feeling of singing the anthem at such a venue. I think that all those who were there would agree that it is a very wonderful feeling. Let's see if we can get 50 or more singing when we return to the ballpark next year.

Below are some still pictures and one video from last Saturday. I have also included a video of our performance. I must give credit to my wife, and chief videographer, Sue, who bravely battled the wind gusts in section 311 to record this video. As you will notice, the combined force of the wind and the chorus ringing that final chord tore her loose from her moorings and swept her to the top of t he scoreboard. As the fireworks explosion knocked her back to ground level, she stoically held on to the camera so that you would be able to view our performance. Thanks again, Sue.

Quartet News

The Summit Chordsmen

On Wednesday, May 12, at 7:00pm, The Summit Chordsmen will be singing at the Emeritus Assisted Living Center in Stow. This performance marks the second sing-out with new bass, Gary Young.

Clear Choice

On Saturday, May 15, Clear Choice will be performing on the campus of Kent State University. The event is a throwback baseball game between KSU and Bowling Green as part of the Centennial celebration of the founding of both schools in 1910. The players will wear vintage uniforms and concession prices will be "old school". The game is free and open to the public. There will be a show of classic cars, as well as historical trivia and prizes. Clear Choice will be strolling and singing in the hospitality tent from 2:00-3;00, and then will sing the National Anthem at 3:00, prior to the start of the game. The site of the game is Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.

What O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

Quartets: They're a heck of a lot easier to get into than they are to get out of.
You'll find the best advice for going into a contest on the label of a mayo jar; keep cool, but don't freeze.
Judge score sheets: There's no column titled "remarks."
Accept the truth. None of the truly great accomplishments of your chorus happened before you joined them.
Risers are a big waste of money. Why not buy a single tower for the director. You'd all see him better and, an added advantage, it would keep him from trying to become part of the first row of the chorus.
Their logic escapes me. They tell me to take "big steps" going up the scale and "small steps" coming down the scale. I tried it in the key of C. I ended up in the key of G.
Yes, we have our contests. But, the true soul of barbershopping does not rest in how well you sing it, rather, in how great it makes you feel while you're singing it.
Have reservations about joining a quartet in which the lead follows the other parts.
The shortest measurement of elapsed time is the time it takes a good woodshedding bari to; Hear the other three notes, identify the intended chord and deliver the missing correct note.
Why is it that 95% of all barroom tags you'll ever hear will be done at one-half the speed of the original quartet.

JAD Spring Contest (continued)

The participation of the Akron Derbytown Chorus in the recent contest was mentioned in the previous issue of the Bulletin. The results are in, so now, the rest of the story.
A total of 28 chorus members made the journey to Olmsted Falls for the competition and convention on April 10. By achieving an average score of 59.2, we were just below the "B" range designation. That is just slightly lower than our score at the Fall Contest in Lima last year. The chorus was well received by the audience and we received encouraging and positive comments from the judges in the post-performance discussions.

The focus of our group in recent years has been more in the direction of having fun while singing and connecting and entertaining the audience. The technical performance, though still important in our progress toward improved singing techniques, is more of an indicator, rather than a goal in and of itself. Since we were performing with a smaller than usual chorus, the results appear to indicate that we at least are holding our own in these competitions.

As often happens, travel, illness and general schedule conflicts make it difficult to put 50 men on the risers at any time. All we can do is keep an eye on the performance and contest schedules and try to participate in as many as possible. And remember, a larger group isn't important just because it may give us a fuller sound, but the social aspect of singing with our fellow chorus members may be the most valuable thing that we take away from any performance.

What O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

As I mentioned when this series began, some of the "old-timers" may have seen them before. They are presented more for newer members and as a refresher for all others. Hopefully, they will both enlighten and entertain.

Always try to look your best on stage. It's easier to fool their eyes than their ears
No matter what happens at contest time, there is always at least one member of the chorus who knew it would.
Although you can't beat the acoustics, think twice before practicing your part to the tag "love me darling and the world is mine" in the men's room.
No man who eats spaghetti is truly alone (no, it has nothing to do with barbershopping). Too, none of my research supports that Mr. Cash ever said it. But, I like to believe that a guy who would give us a twelve-word name would have found this to be funny).
There are too few really good leads around any more. If you had one in your quartet you'd be competing at International. You know it. I know it.
If you think you're good enough to sing in a quartet, or if you think you're not good enough to sing in a quartet, you're right.
Show me a baritone who doesn't like over-tiddlied arrangements and I'll show you a man with violent opinions. All of them wrong.
Contests: If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.
Contests: You have six minutes to make history or be history.
Never be awed by what you may believe to better quartets in your upcoming contest. The odds are always 50/50. Either you'll win or you won't.

Singing At Progressive Field

On Saturday, May 8, the chorus will make what has become our annual visit to Cleveland to sing The National Anthem prior to a Tribe game. This year's game is against division rival Detroit and it is scheduled to begin at 1:05 pm. We hope that you and your family and friends can join us for what is always a great afternoon at the ballpark.

In Remembrance
of
Ed Crosley

On March 31, 2010, our Chapter, our District and our Society lost a valuable and hardworking member. Ed Crosley, a barbershopper for 44 years, passed away at age 90. Music and performing began for Ed at the age of 9 and continued throughout his life. His contributions to our Chapter as a board member, a valued member of the baritone section and his many JAD accomplishments have contributed greatly to the growth of barbershop in Akron and Ohio.

Our sympathy goes out to Ed's wife of 67 years, Billie and all his family. As those who visited Ed after he was hospitalized can attest, singing barbershop was a joy and comfort to Ed, even as his health declined. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His influence and contributions regarding our Chapter will be a legacy that all of us should use as motivation to "Keep The Whole World Singing".

What O. C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

The best two places to hide in a chapter are, in order, the nominating committee and the bass section.
There never has, nor will there ever be, a contested election for Treasurer.
The selection of a Chorus Director is obviously a personality contest. Were it otherwise, wouldn't you be the Director?
The only advantage to being a Chorus Director is that you get someone else to carry your pitchpipe.
It is morally wrong to allow baritones to keep all of the tidilies.
It's always darkest before the curtain opens.
Barbershoppers will accept your idea much more readily if you tell them that last year's championship quartet/chorus did it that way.
When your friend becomes a section leader, you just lost a friend.
Be careful when asked to sing the same note throughout an entire tag-it's probably the most difficult part to do well.
The most powerful hex-phrase in all of barbershopping: "I really have this down-listen to this."

Another Opening, Another Show

Well, another successful show has come and gone. A magnificent job of planning and preparation by many chapter members and hours of work, both on and off the risers by the entire chorus, bore fruit once again. The audiences on Friday and Saturday were very enthusiastic and , by their applause, showed that they fully enjoyed the variety of presentations in this production. The chorus, all the Chapter quartets and of course our special guests, Bustin' Loose and Our Town appealed to those long time barbershop fans, and provided a fresh view of our hobby to audience members that were not sure what barbershop was all about. Also our MC, Tom Gentry, did a masterful job of keeping the show flowing from start to finish. How can we top this next year? Stay tuned.

Advice to newly formed quartets; don't ask for requests. You'll never know it.

Advice to newly formed quartets; never challenge a heckler to come up and sing it better. He or she will.

Advice to newly formed quartets; a pitchpipe makes an excellent medium-range weapon.

Chorus progress is made on alternate meeting nights.

The bass section: never needlessly disturb a thing at rest.

The easiest way to find your misplaced pitchpipe is to buy a new one.

No matter how many rooms in the headquarters hotel, the guy who starts up his car at 5 am is always parked under your window.

Sound-judges will believe anything if you whisper it.

Choruses who don't work at what they've learned from post-contest A & R sessions will repeat those mistakes. Those who do work at it will find other ways to err.

Singing lead is as much attitude as it is technique.

Chapter Welcomes Visitors

We have been fortunate to have some very special visitors at recent rehearsals. A quartet of young men from Miller South School were with us on February 23. They are playing the roles of the School Board in a production of The Music Man. The four also joined us on the risers to experience what it's like to sing in a barbershop chorus.

In addition, Rob Churgovich came by to do a coaching session aimed at improving our show performance. Rob is the lead for current JAD champion quartet, 4-Way Stop. We were able to observe a wide spectrum of barbershop, from the pre-high school level where the future lies, to the polished, competition-tested knowledge of a member of a championship quartet. Thanks to Matt, D'Angelo, Aiden, Gavin and Rob for spicing up our Tuesday evening.

Paradise Coastmen Annual Show

On Saturday, March 6, Sue and I attended the 35th annual show of The Paradise Coastmen, the Naples, FL BHS Chapter. In an earlier Bulletin issue, I reported on a visit that I made to one of this groups rehearsals. At that time they were working hard in preparation for this show. You may recognize the name of their Director. Steve Jamison is a well-known director, contest judge and arranger. He is also currently the Chairman of the BHS Contest and Judging Committee.

The title of this show was " Red, White and Green". It featured Irish music written by American composers. There are certainly a lot of great songs that fit into that category. As is often the case, the chorus opened and closed the show. In between, we were treated to a variety of musical entertainment. There were three Chapter quartets, "Zoom", a very talented Sweet Adelines quartet, two sisters who performed Irish dances, a bagpiper who led the audience back from intermission, and a young lady who played Irish tunes on her fiddle. And of course there was the featured quartet, "Our Town", the headliners for our own show later this month.

We got to talk with the members of "Our Town" for a while after the show. I asked them to say hello for me when they get to Akron, and I told them that I hoped that it would be 75 deg. when they got there(but not to count on it). It turned out to be one of those "right time at the right place" moments. The parents of "Our Town" lead singer, Scott Brannon, had come to this show. The quartet invited Sue and I to go outside for an impromptu concert. They serenaded Scott's mom and dad (and us) with two new songs that they are working on. I have no doubt that the Akron audiences will love "Our Town". Their song selection and presentation, mixed with a little humor, results in a great performance.

Even though I won't be there for our show, I was glad to see a little segment of it this year.

What O.C. Cash Forgot To Tell Us

The guy who says that Stage Presence is an easy, risk-free way to get added contest points should be shot. Twice!

There is nothing wrong with being seen by the Chorus Director while looking at your watch...try to avoid his seeing you shaking it.

All choruses have chaos...the successful ones are those who hide this fact from the judges, at least most of the time.

Leads; the longer a song is, the higher the probability that the tag will be in your comfort zone.

Wear white pants to all chorus rehearsals. No one will ever ask you to help with the risers.

A correctly delivered relative third never needs to be sharpened, brightened or sung on the high side.

Volunteer to be the chorus pitchpipe person. You'll never again have to sing a song outside of your range.

I'd like to live long enough to see; a quartet who could sing the phrase "gonna build a little home for two, or three, or four or more" without using their fingers as counters.

I'd like to live long enough to see; a chorus who could sing the phrase "strolling/walking down the lane" without sweeping their many right arms from stage left to stage right.

Your favorite song, on your favorite barbershop CD, will always come out of your car speaker when you reach your destination.

Singing Valentines Program Successful!

A huge round of applause goes out to all those who helped to plan and perform the 2010 Singing Valentines Program. Chapter quartets once again provided a wonderful way for the expression of love at this special time of year. Clear Choice made an appearance on the early morning WNIR radio show to promote the program, and chorus member Chris Eitman sang lead in a quartet and concluded this singing valentine with a proposal of marriage to his then girlfriend, now fiance. Congratulations Chris and Sabra.

There has already been much interest in barbershop generated by this weekend of singing, including interest in the annual show, and potential gigs for chapter quartets. Again, thanks to all who participated in any way and lets work to make this program continue and grow in the coming years.

Our Chapter has developed a great connection with baseball through our chorus and quartet performances for the Indians and the Aeros. Here is a another connection between our hobby and the Grand Old Game.

There is no such thing as being a little flat.

The worst (insert your choice: tenor lead, bari or bass) always sings the loudest.

90 % of the members of any given barbershop chorus will consider themselves to be in the top 50 % of that chorus talent pool.

The older you get, the better your voice used to be.

There is too much apathy in most chapters ... but who cares.

Chorus favorite; a bass, bari or tenor who would say, just once, that he wasn't brought down by the lead section.

Chorus sadist; the guy who feels obligated to blow the pitchpipe at the end of the song.

Barbershop On Stage In Kent

On the blustery evening of Friday, February 5, members of the Akron Derbytown Chorus gathered to perform at The Kent Stage. This historic former movie theater has hosted high profile entertainers over the years and continues to provide a great venue for the exploration of a wide variety of musical performances. The chorus was the headliner for the Kent Rotary Club's "Music On Main Street" program.

The chorus, as well as Chapter quartets, gave an appreciative audience an evening of harmony. The 90 minute show allowed us to present a few songs from our upcoming show, as well as many of the "old favorites".

JAD Senior Quartets Find Success In Tampa

At a gathering that was the best attended Mid-Winter convention ever, four Senior quartets from our District impressed the audiences well as the judges.

The reigning JAD Senior Quartet Champions, Lightly Seasoned, finished in fifth place in the field of 27 quartets. That entitled them to return to Ohio with bronze medals.

Congratulations to; Greg Batchelor, Baritone, Darryl Flinn, Bass, George Alcorn, Lead, and Joe Fraley, Tenor, all members of the Canton Chapter.

Other JAD quartets also fared well in the eyes of the judges. "Test Of Time" finished 12th, "Over Easy", 16th and "Riverblend" 17th. Congratulations to all these quartets for representing our District and letting people know that barbershop is alive and well in our part of the world.

Some people believed that if a woman saw a robin-flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor and if she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a very rich person.

Any SPEBSQSA member who's not a member of another chapter is a member of the Frank Thorne Chapter. This is the largest chapter there is. So who is Frank Thorne? Here is an excerpt from "Melodies for Millions", by Will Cook, published in 1965 for the 25th anniversary of the Society.

. . . Frank Thorne, International President in 1946 and 1947. He was medium tall, slender, balding, very distinguished, with a mustache; he presented a commanding appearance but at the same time seemed to have a twinkle in his eye. He was an excellent business man, being vice president of one corporation and president of several others as well as a member of the board in additional companies. Frank was a good instrumental musician and a fine singer; he sang bass with the 1942 International Champion Elastic Four.

Frank's trademark in the Society was his writing longhand notes in the margins of letters sent to him to mail back as replies. One of his most famous replies was one he addressed to then International Secretary Carroll Adams; at one point on a margin of a letter several pages long, Frank wrote: "Nuts!"

Frank Thorne was one of the most aptly named men; Frank was really "frank!" He had a way of making comments and offering constructive criticism which was startling in its bluntness and brevity, but you remembered what he had to say and you knew he said it for the good of the Society or your own personal good. He was outspoken but never mean or vindictive.

He had a sense of humor too. He was asked by the Executive Committee several years prior to his death to talk to a recalcitrant District President, one who called a lot of us Communists and was really stirring things up. Frank was asked to tone him down.

When reporting on his success he opened the conversation by saying, "I talked to God last night."

He was an excellent correspondent and took great pains to say the right thing and to be as helpful as possible in letters to arrangers and quartet men.

In England, the Romans, who had taken over the country, had introduced a pagan fertility festival held every February 14. After the Romans left England, Pope Gelsius, who established St. Valentine's Day as a celebration of love in 496 A.D. abolished the pagan ritual. ____________________________________________________________________

A Visit To The Paradise Coastmen

On Thursday, January 21, your chapter bulletin editor, a snowbird resident of Bonita Springs, FL visited a rehearsal of the barbershop chorus in nearby Naples. Another resident of the RV park where my wife Sue and I are spending the winter is a member of this chorus and invited me to go with him to the rehearsal.

The chorus is in the process of preparing for their show, titled "Red, White and Green". It features a great selection of Irish songs by American composers. Many of you may be familiar with the chorus director, Steve Jamison. He is a long time barbershopper, as well as a well known arranger, coach and judge at all levels including International. I picked up a few warmup techniques and some other singing tips that I will share when I get back to Akron. With the show scheduled for a 7:00 pm evening performance on March 5 and a 2:00 matinee and another evening performance on March 6, the chorus is rehearsing Thursday evenings as well as Saturday afternoons.

I found that this chorus, although a bit larger than ours and , as with many groups in Florida, a bit older on the average, they were quite similar to us in song selection and the general way that rehearsals are conducted. There were three men, who happened to be absent for this rehearsal, that were mentioned for their 53 year renewal.

I have added a link to the Paradise Coastmen's website to the "Hot Links" section at the top right of the bulletin page. If you check the information about the show, you will notice that the featured quartet for this show is "Our Town". Small world, isn't it?

Sue and I will be attending the show, so we'll get to see at least a portion of the Akron show when "Our Town" does their segment.

The Bung-Bung System

Has A Place In History

Those of us who have been in the chapter for a few years remember when the guy directing craft sessions or warm-ups would sometimes say, "Sing that phrase saying 'bung, bung, bung.'" I figured that somebody, somewhere, who taught vocal techniques had recently decided that use of this syllable would expedite musical learning. Personally, I didn't think singing the word "bung" would help me to sing better, or hear the chords better, or do whatever else better that it was supposed to do. While reviewing some material I picked up at Harmony College last summer, however, I ran across the following story from the life of our founding father, O. C. Cash.

Cash, who was born in 1892, was raised in a part of Oklahoma described as a rather wild area. His father was a leading citizen in the community and was president of the school board. One day two hoboes who had been kicked off a train by a railroad detective wandered into the general store and overheard Mr. Cash remark that the community needed a schoolmaster.

One of them, a man named Jim Wiley, said, "I can teach."

Mr. Cash, who was understandably skeptical, asked him if the world was flat or round. The hobo replied, "I can teach it either way."

"You've got a job," said Mr. Cash.

Wiley became the local school master and also organized a night school in which he taught mathematics one evening and music another. Young O.C. Cash attended the music classes and later recalled that Wiley taught his pupils to harmonize familiar chords on the syllable "bung." Wiley called this the bung-bung system, and it made a permanent impression on Cash.

One day some law enforcement officers appeared at the school and told all of the children to go home. Mr. Wiley, they explained, had to go away for a while. He never returned.

Forty years later, after Cash had become a lawyer, he decided to try to find out what had happened to this man. He discovered the Jim Wiley had died in an Illinois penitentiary, after being convicted of forgery. Cash always believed that he was framed.

Despite my original impression, singing "bung, bung, bung" has a place in barbershop history. I guess that it wasn't as dumb as I thought.

If you are reading this, you have successfully arrived in the new decade.

Congratulations!

This is an achievement that should be a source of pride. But, despite the Cunard Line's slogan that "Getting there is half the fun.", 2010 will bring many more new barbershop experiences for all of us. There will be new songs, new singers, a new show and all the fun that is connected to those things. So here's to a great upcoming year for you and yours.

Melrose Apples

A few issues ago, it was mentioned that Robin Reid treated members of the Board to Melrose apples at one of our monthly Board meetings. The Melrose name is used to identify our Division of the Johnny Appleseed District. A follow-up was promised and so, here it is.

The breeding of the Melrose apple was begun at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station in Wooster, OH, in 1931. It was selected in 1937 and introduced to the public in 1944. It is the official apple variety of Ohio and ripens here in mid to late October.

The Melrose is a cross of a Jonathan, which accounts for the white flesh and rich flavor, and the Red Delicious, which provides the shape and sweetness.

This apple is one of the best "keepers" of all time. At normal storage temperatures of 30-32 deg., they can be stored for five months and actually seem to develop a better taste with time.

So, the next time you attend a Melrose event or sing with the Melrose Chorus, you'll know a little more about the apple that provided us with the name. Maybe we could start a tradition of having some of these apples present at special chorus events during the year.

Keeping Up With Chorus Activities

We are fortunate in the Derbytown Chorus to have a constant series of ongoing events and performances. The Chorus, Matinee Singers and Chapter quartets are always working to KTWWS. We are also fortunate to have available documents, both print and online, that help us keep track of all these activities.

High Notes- Robin Reid provides us with a weekly reminder as well as documentation of rehearsal activities. High Notes is available in print form at rehearsals and online in the "members" section of the Chapter Website.

Chapter Email Newsletter- Jim Bishop makes information about Chapter activities and also news from the world of barbershop available to all those on our email list.

Derbytown Chorus Bulletin- This publication was started to bring in some of the more unusual or lesser known information related to barbershop as well as to singing in general. Important events and activities of the chorus will be included also, but the focus will be on discussion of topics that might not appear in the Newsletter or High Notes.

The New Year in Scotland is called Hogmanay. The people in Scotland follow a ritual that appears nutty but actually has a great significance. One can find barrels of tar set afire and gradually rolled down the streets in the villages of Scotland. This ritual symbolizes that the old year is burned up and New Year is going to begin.

Baby New Year Tradition :
The tradition of using a baby to signify the New Year was started around 600 B.C by the ancient Greeks, who, at the start of a year would carry a baby around in a basket. The purpose of it was to honor Dionysus, the God of Fertility and symbolize his annual rebirth.

Quartet Activities

The Summit Chordsmen

On November 20th, the Summit Chordsmen made their second annual appearance at Sharkey's Barbershop in Wadsworth as part of the Wadsworth Christmas Candle Walk celebration. Downtown streets were closed and merchants opened their shops for the crowds of early Christmas shoppers. The streets were crowded as families came downtown to see Santa arrive, check out the authentic reindeer and look at the sidewalk candles and light displays, Horse-drawn carriage rides made the scene look like a Norman Rockwell painting. Melissa Vetter, owner of Sharkey's Barbershop, served up Christmas treats and beverages to the many folks who ventured into her shop. They were also treated to the sounds of the Summit Chordsmen. The quartet sang for two hours to the many happy people at this feel good event.

Eating 12 Grapes :
In Spain people eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight (one each time the clock chimes) on New Year's Eve. This peculiar ritual originated in the twentieth century when freak weather conditions resulted in an unseasonable bumper harvest of grapes. Not able to decide what to do about so many grapes at Christmas time, the King of Spain and the grape growers came up with the idea of the New Year ritual. Now, if only this happened all around the world...

First Night

The Derbytown Chorus will again be part of the First Night Celebration in Akron. This is the 14th year for First Night, and our Chorus has been there every year.

We will sing at 9:00 at Greystone Hall, 103 S. High St., Akron. Be at the hall at 8:15 for warm-up. We will be wearing tux shirts and tux pants, red vests and red ties, tux shoes with black socks. As always, be alert for announcements at rehearsals and in the High Notes and the Bulletin about any changes or requirements.

Eating Noodles :
Late on the evening of December 31, people of Japan would eat a bowl of buckwheat noodles called "toshikoshisoba" ("year-crossing noodles") and listen for the sound of the Buddhist temple bells, which were rung 108 times at midnight. The sound of these bells is said to purify the listeners of the 108 sins or evil passions that plague every human being.

As barbershoppers, we have many opportunities to be part of the "Sounds of Christmas". Whether you are singing with the chorus, a quartet or friends and family, the wonderful songs and the messages that they express make this time of year that much more meaningful. Here is a summary of some recent Chapter performances.

Salvation Army Kettle
Summit Mall

On Saturday, November 28, the chorus and chapter quartets visited Summit Mall to sing our Christmas program and help The Salvation Army with their annual Red Kettle Program. We arrived early to warm up and then moved to one of the atrium areas where we could use the steps as risers and also have a chance to attract more people. We sang from 1:00 until 3:00 to a very appreciative crowd. As is typical at a mall, the audience included youngsters, oldsters and everyone in between. Many could be seen singing along as we performed. Historically, the Red Kettle sing-out is one of our first Holiday performances, and it certainly got our minds looking forward to a musical and busy month of December.

"White Christmas" (1954), starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, was the first movie to be made in Vista Vision, a deep-focus process.

Copley Place Performance

Next, the chorus traveled to Copley Place for a 2:00 pm show on Saturday, December 5. As always, the beautiful building and decorations, combined with an enthusiastic audience brought out the best in our singing. By now our Christmas show was becoming a well-oiled machine, with very few squeaks. Copley Place has been very helpful to the chorus, especially for providing transportation for some of our members to our Cleveland TV performances the last two years.

According to historical accounts, the first Christmas in the Philippines was celebrated 200 years before Ferdinand Magellan discovered the country for the western world, likely between the years 1280 and 1320 AD.

Ringing In The Season In Norton

On Sunday, December 6, we gathered in Norton to be part of the musical portion of the Norton Baptist Church's "Ring In The Season Festival". Our own Terry Arman is a member of this church and he acted as our MC during the 30 minute show. It was great to add some barbershop to the contributions of other performers who sang or played instruments during the afternoon. In addition to the musical part of the festival, there was a delicious display of Holiday baked goods, provided by the congregation. More than a few Chapter members were observed sampling these treats along with hot chocolate, coffee and hot cider. For the bakers in the crowd, there were stacks of printed recipes next to each item in case anyone wanted to reproduce these goodies at home.

Alabama was the first state to recognize Christmas as an official holiday. This tradition began in 1836.

Chorus Performance On Fox8

On Monday, December 7, a hardy group of barbershoppers proved that we can sing before 8:00 am. We accepted the invitation of Cleveland's Fox8 TV station to sing some Christmas songs on their morning show. This is our second visit to Fox 8, having performed last February to promote our annual show and the Singing Valentines program. Some singers came to the studio courtesy of Copley Place transportation, others carpooled from the JoAnn Fabrics parking lot in Hudson, and some traveled on their own. Once we all got through a typical morning rush hour, the performance went very well. We were able to provide five songs as the show transitioned to and from commercial breaks. There was also a live interview with our director, Scott Giles. This provided more opportunity to promote the Chapter and barbershop harmony. Plans are in the works to make another appearance in February. We actually got a request for a chorus performance within 24 hours of the show. That kind of advertising is hard to beat, and it's basically free.

An artificial spider and web are often included in the decorations on Ukrainian Christmas trees. A spider web found on Christmas morning is believed to bring good luck.

Quartet News

Clear Choice

Dan, Ray, Jim and Bill have been busy little reindeer this year. There is certainly a demand for live singing groups at this time of year and that can lead to a hectic, but fun schedule. This is what Clear Choice has been up to lately.

November 8- Three pre-recorded video song segments by the quartet were aired as part of the Humane Society of Summit County Telethon on Warner Cable Channel 23. Also included was a live interview with Ray Stone.

November 16- Sang at Woodridge Middle School for Senior Citizen group from Peninsula. The quartet also performed for the school's vocal music class, listened to songs that the students were learning for their Christmas program and held a question and answer session about barbershop and quartet singing. One of the students was the grandaughter of Chapter member, Jim Malley.

November 27- Did a 45 minute show for the Children's Hospital Tree Festival at the John S. Knight Center.

December 1- Sang at the tree lighting at Rockynol Retirement Community.

December 3- Strolling and singing at St. Joseph's Family Center for the Pregnancy Care of Summit County's Charity Auction.

December 5- Sang a 30 minute show for the residents of Chambrel.

December 13- From 2:00-3:00, entertained at Springhill Historic Home and Farm in Massillon, for the volunteer staff Christmas party.

December 14- Sing at 12:30 in downtown Akron at a Christmas party for Miller Examination Services.

December 17- A 30 minute show for the Lions Club at the Galaxy Restaurant in Wadsworth.

Before settling on the name of Tiny Tim for his character in "A Christmas Carol," three other alliterative names were considered by Charles Dickens. They were Little Larry, Puny Pete, and Small Sam.

Annual Business Meeting/Christmas Party

The Chapter's Annual Business Meeting and Christmas Party was held on Saturday, December 12 at St' Joseph's Family Center. In addition to a wonderful meal and plenty of socializing, there was of course singing. Prior to the singing, however, there were two very important items of business that needed to be taken care of.

The Derbytown Chorus sang a few Holiday songs as did Chapter quartets, The Summit Chordsmen and Clear Choice

A big thank-you goes out to Jim Elliot for organizing and coordinating everything to make this event the enjoyable evening that it was.

In an effort to solicit cash to pay for a charity Christmas dinner in 1891, a large crabpot was set down on a San Francisco street, becoming the first Salvation Army collection kettle.

In the Thomas Nast cartoon that first depicted Santa Claus with a sleigh and reindeer, he was delivering Christmas gifts to soldiers fighting in the U.S. Civil War. The cartoon, entitled "Santa Claus in Camp," appeared in Harper's Weekly on January 3, 1863.

'Tis The Season

Tuesday night rehearsals have begun to take on a definite Holiday feeling. Because of all of the performances that we have scheduled from late November through mid-December, we have begun to polish up our Christmas repertoire. As you can tell from the photo on the right, even the chorus "reindeer" have made an early appearance. The scheduled sing-outs are listed below. All are encouraged to participate, and as always, there are sign-up sheets on the table at rehearsals.

Saturday 11/ 28: Sing at Salvation Army Kettle, Summit Mall, 1-3

Saturday, 12/5: Copley Place, sing at 2:00

Sunday, 12/6: Sing at Terry Arman's church, between 3 and 5 (more details to come)

Monday, 12/7: Fox 8 News Morning Show, 7:30-9:00

Saturday, 12/12: Annual Business Meeting and Christmas Party, St. Joseph's Family Center, 7:00-open bar, 8:00-dinner

Tuesday, 12/15, Barberton Moose, sing from 6:45-7:30

Getting To Know Us

This mystery chorus member has been a barbershopper for 26 years, having been a member of the Lawton, OK chapter, the Cleveland East Suburbanaires, and for the last 12 years, the Derbytown Chorus.

He was born in Salem, OH and lived in Lisbon, OH through high school. Then came four years at The Ohio State University, two years in the U.S. Army and eight years in the world of work near Chicago, IL. He then moved back to Ohio . He is married and has two children.

Music has always been an important part of his life. His grandmother lived with his family and played the piano almost every day. His mother played the violin and both parents liked to sing. He took many piano and organ lessons as a young man and sang in the church choir. He also played trombone in his high school band and began playing regularly as a church organist during his junior year.

His main occupations have been Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer and Software Quality Engineer. During his army service, he was a lieutenant in Army Field Artillery at Fort Sill, OK and South Korea. One engineering job with Johnson and Johnson provided his family with free disposable diapers during the year when his first daughter was born.

Hobbies outside of barbershop center on participation in church choirs and being a church organist.

This barbershopper's identity will be revealed in the 12/ 14 Bulletin issue.

Barbershop Glossary

Resonators-Any of the parts and cavities of the vocal instrument that acoustically reinforce sound. Principal resonators are the throat and the mouth, with sympathetic vibrations in the upper chest and nasal area. (Alternate definition: The band fronted by Cleveland's own Michael Stanley)

Synchronization-Precision in singing which includes attacks and releases of words, uniformity of word sounds and rhythmic exactness.

Tone-A musical sound having a definite pitch and regularity of vibration rate. Also the interval between two notes comprised of two semi-tones. (ex., C and D are a tone apart)

Tremelo-Excessively wide or fast vibrato that leads to a loss of a distinct sense of central pitch. Usually caused by poor breath support and a faulty control of singing muscles.

Vibrato-A regular, periodic pitch oscillation above and below a tonal center. A natural phenomenon when used with a minute variation in pitch to give warmth and color to the tone quality.

Vowel-A speech sound uttered with voice or whisper characterized by the resonance from the vocal cavities.

Memorizing A Song

Maybe your quartet has just started working on a new song. How about all the new songs that the chorus will learn for the 2010 Show? Learning a new song is a necessary part of being a barbershopper. The guide below, which was adapted from an article by Merrill Miller, Minneapolis Commodores, should make this process easier.

Memorization involves three aspects:(1) Commitment, (2) Method and (3)Formula

(1) Commitment-Nothing is memorized until and unless you decide to do it. Until you consciously try to commit it to memory, it won't happen. That's commitment.
Each of us has the same number of hours in the day to spend in some manner. Assign a priority to memorizing and put this activity ahead of something else. Give yourself a reasonable deadline.

(2) Method-here are some good ones (a) put the music down as soon and as often as possible when the song is being taught. (b) write the lyrics over and over until it can be done perfectly three times in a row. (c) record the song, then play it while driving, riding, waiting, etc.

(3) Formula-these should be helpful (a) learn the form first, e.g., intro-verse-chorus-tag; (b) pay particular attention to first words of phrases, ending words or preceding phrases; (c) learn the story line--how does it begin and end and what is the sequence of happenings; (d) identify which significant notes, words, swipes, etc., are repeated exactly in different places in the song and, conversely, what things happen differently in similar places; and finally (e) notice what other voices are doing when they are not using the same rhythm or words that you are

Annual Business Meeting/Christmas Party

The ABM/CP will be held on Saturday, December 12 at St. Joseph's Family Center, 600 West Exchange Street, Akron, OH. Members attendance is paid for by the Chapter. Cost for guests is $23. Open bar begins at 7:00, followed by dinner at 8:00. The dinner will be served and will be from a fixed menu. Watch for additional information online and at rehearsals. There is a sign-up sheet on the table at rehearsals.

Herb Shreffler Honored By JAD

At the recent JAD Fall Contest and Convention in Lima, Herb Shreffler was recognized for his contributions to our District and to barbershop music by being inducted into the JAD Hall of Fame. Over the years, Herb has been involved in many facets of our Society and is a long-time Akron Chapter member.

At our regular rehearsal on October 27, Herb and his wife Nancy attended so that we might celebrate his induction with both of them. Herb shared some of his thoughts and experiences with us from his early days in barbershop and in our Chapter. He mentioned that the Akron Chapter will always be special to him, and those members in attendance expressed pride in his achievements.

At the conclusion of the celebration, we gathered for fellowship, some singing and delicious cake and beverages.

Youth Barbershop Concert This Friday

On Friday, November 13, The Kent State University Men's Chorus will host the 5th Annual KSU All-Ohio Men's Chorus Day. This event will feature over 175 high school and college men singing barbershop music together in a chorus. This group will be co-directed by Dr. Scott MacPherson and Dr. Ben Ayling. Dr. MacPherson is Director of Choral Activities at KSU, Artistic Director of the San Antonio Chamber Choir and the Isthmus Vocal Ensemble. Dr. Ayling is Assistant Professor of Music at KSU, Conductor of the KSU Men's Chorus and sang bass for the 1991 International Quartet Champions, The Ritz.

The concert begins at 7:30 P.M. in the University Auditorium ( Carol A. Cartwright Hall) on Hilltop Drive on the KSU Campus Tickets are $10.00 ($7.00 for seniors) and will be sold at the door. The Bulletin Logistics Coordinator, George Pickens-Sloan, advises all those planning to attend to allow extra time to find parking. The KSU campus has been a parking problem since the advent of the horseless carriage.

This sounds like a great evening of entertainment for those who sing and/or enjoy barbershop harmony. The concert is partially funded by The Barbershop Harmony Society.

Chapter Novice Quartet Night

On Tuesday, November 3, in what has become a popular annual event, 11 quartets gave it their all in the 2009 Derbytown Chorus Novice Quartet Competition. The contest encourages singers to sing with new partners, sing outside their normal sections and above all have fun. This is also a great night for those who have not sung in a quartet to get their vocal chords wet. (Well, we don't sing with our feet, do we?)

As always, the singing was great, the applause was generous, the rules were chisled in mayonnaise and everyone loved it. A huge thank you to Jerry Mason for coordinating this event and to all who sang.

Important Notice!!

Chorus PR Photo To Be Taken

At the 11/10 rehearsal (TOMORROW NIGHT!!), we will be taking a chorus photo. We need this now for the 2010 Show mailer and for other PR items in the future. The new tux shirts are scheduled to be delivered to us that night. You will need to bring your tuxedo (coat, pants, shoes, socks and black bow tie). There will be a place to change into your tux and the picture will be taken in the chancel of Holy Trinity. This is your chance to make sure that your image is included in Chapter mailings for the forseeable future.

One Becomes Four

The bulletin has included several split screen videos in earlier issues. Most of those were related to tags. You may have noticed that there are now a plethora (Latin for " a boat load") of these on YouTube. Here are a trio that each take the idea a little further than just a tag. The first one is very traditional barbershop, the other two, not so much.

The last one is kind of an interesting study in vowel sounds and facial expressions, don't you think?
